Nothing like a strong thumb!
My body guy Steve is great, I could not get by without him. He is the owner and driving force behind LA Sports Performance Care in Manhattan Beach, is a father of 2, a runner, a cyclist and owns the most talented thumbs around. Steve knows exactly how to find any hung up soft tissue on my body and rub it out, he moves X back and forth while inducing 500 PSI of thumb pressure on Y. Really amazing, some people really are healers, and Steve is one of those people. I spent years trying different versions for chiropractic, massage, physical therapy and doctors, all a waste of money and time. If you find “your Steve” hang on to him, it’s like finding a good dentist or auto repair guys, just hope they outlive you!
Steve “gets it” as well, he ride/runs (guy is damn strong) and works on lots of athletes, he is not using any funky chiropractic witchcraft or what not and not trying to lock me into a long term financial retainer. He simply looks at me as i walk down the hall into his room, asks me a few questions and then immediately finds a few tight areas and blasts them with his thumbs, the next day i am good.
Steve and i have actually gone way beyond the standard doctor/patient relationship. While Steve annihilates my body with his thumbs he also listens to me bitch about my life as well as absorbs my endless hypothesis on potential performance gains. Steve is a sharp guy and understand the bio mechanics of the human body in a way that is beyond my personal knowledge, having him around to explain how my joints/tendons/muscles are interacting is great. On a typical session we will discuss in detail how a change in my seat position, a bottom bracket width, low RPM climbing intervals or a new stretch is going to affect my sustainable wattage output. As a bonus i can also pick his brain for business advice, parenting advice, VW Eurovan advice, IPA advice and exchange tips on new local trails to ride in PV. I almost feel guilty that i am not paying for body care AND counseling!
So if you have a good “guy” for this stuff, hold on to him. If you need one, give Steve a call.
