Carnage!
So today was more of the same, I am in the middle of my endurance block of hour training. Basically some variation of 3 x 30 minutes at 42-45kph with 5 minutes of recover and a gear change between sets. I can finally say this is causing some good additions in my posture and ability to comfortably put the power down to the pedals. This is also some good mental strengthening and taint toughing.
So the first 2 sets went as planed, not real exciting.
For the 3rd set we we were running out of track time, so Rog decided I would do my last effort during the Sunday afternoon Madison training session. so we would do 120 laps at around 45 kph, I would lead the motor for 2 laps and then the motor would lead me for 2 laps, while we are doing this some guys would be doing Madison behind us. I like this type of workout better than a steady state one, riding with the motor is always a bit more exciting and motivating, also gives me a chance to sit up and relive the pressure points a tick while behind the motor.
All was going well for the first 76 laps, our average speed was bang on 46 kph and I was working hard, but under control and really enjoying myself. Then as I am leading the motor through the middle of the turn, I see a newbie Madison rider sliding down the track, from the very top (2 stories up) directly into my path. No time to alter my course, I am doing 49.4 kph in the turn and leaning deep, just brace for impact. Funny how when you crash it almost goes into slow motion, you actually have time to think while you are sprawling your body across the ground. I had one thought, am I about to get run over by a motor scooter now? Thank the lord, somehow Rog got over the top of us.
Some Guy: Kevin, are you ok???
Me: No, I am not ok.
Some Guy: Uh oh, what do you need?
Me: Ah crap, I am ok, I am not going to die, but I am fucked up.
So I chilled out and stared at the ceiling for about 5 minutes and then had the guy pull me up. Good body shred on my butt, hip, knee and forearm. Perfect, just what I needed for my hour prep. But hey, nothing broken and I did not get run over, feeling pretty good. Good thing I rode to the track today with my kid, sure he enjoyed watching Dad fly through the air and shred his body.
Rog: So your ok?
Me: Yea, basically.
Rog: Ok then, we have 44 laps to go. You are going to be sore tomorrow, might as well finish the training for today.
Me: Ok.
Back at it, spent about 6 laps on the motor loosening up and then started our 2 laps on, 2 laps off. I guess this is part of the mental toughing process of my hour prep. I have to say though, this workout with the crash included, still hurt less than my 1 hour test the week before!
You can see my power file for our final interval below, notice how my HR jumps up a bit while I am laying on the ground right after impact.
